Originating in ancient China, the basic idea of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is balancing the body's imbalance to prevent or treat diseases and disorders and maintain optimal health.
According to the TCM theory, all diseases, disorders, and discomforts are caused by imbalances or disharmonies. By inserting thin needles in various locations on your body, acupuncture facilitates the smooth flow of energy ("qi") in the correct direction and restores balance and harmony.
In TCM, diagnoses are determined based on your current condition, health history, lifestyle, diet, and findings from your tongue and pulse and other physical assessments. Acupuncture points are chosen according to their indications. The meridians that the points belong to, their pathways, relationships between other meridians, and internal systems are also considered when selecting the points.
What happens during an acupuncture treatment?
After an intake and needed assessments, the typical treatment is done while lying on your back or stomach based on your comfort and the locations of the points chosen. After needles are inserted, they are retained for 20-30 minutes (sometimes longer), so it is very important that you are comfortable throughout the treatment. The practitioner will step out of the treatment room during this time, but you will have a pager to have access to any assistance needed.
