it's "oo-koo-le-le"

The ukulele ("uku" = flea, "lele" = to jump, in Hawaiian) was brought to Hawai'i by Portuguese immigrants and gained popularity in Hawai'i, then the world...I think that ukulele is one of the most friendly musical instruments; it's portable, it only has 4 strings, and it makes soft, sweet and warm sound.

It is relatively easy for beginners to learn how to play the ukulele. You can play some songs with as few as 3-4 chords or even 1 or 2!

Ukulele basics: Tuning ukulele

The standard ("soprano" and "concert") tuning for the ukulele is G, C, E, A, from the 4th string to the 1st string in the picture. The easiest way to tune your ukulele is to use an electric tuner. There are also many smartphone apps available for ukulele tuners.

There are two ways to tune the 4th string: "High G" and "Low G." Low G is an octave lower than high G. High G tuning is more common, but it's about your preference and which sounds good to you.

Playing ukulele

The "High G" tuning is the common tuning. G is a higher note than C and E. It has a light and sweeter sound.

Playing ukulele

"Low G" is more common among professional ukulele players  (...I think) the low G sound can add depth the sound.

When in doubt, look it up on the net! There are so many tutorial videos and resources out there, from "How to tune ukulele" to "How to strum ukulele" and "[song name] ukulele chords" to "ukulele classes/instructors near me."

Below is a list of basic ukulele chords if you don't already have one.

Happy strumming!
